Howard began his career at
non-league Tow Law Town before moving to
Hartlepool United in 1995 and moving on to
Northampton Town as their record signing for
£120,000 in February 1999. Luton Town signed
him for £50,000 on March 22, 2001 with
another £25,000 due if Luton avoided
relegation which they didn't. The 2001-2002
season was a good one for Howard as he won the
Division 3 Golden Boot with 24 goals including 19
in 19 matches after Christmas. His goals
certainly contributed to Luton's promotion to
Division 2 and in their first season back there
he was once again leading goal scorer with 23
goals, as he was once again during the 2004-2005
season with 16 goals, and again in 2005-2006 with
15 goals. Howard is a bustling, traditional
centre forward at 6'3" (191 cm) and over 14 st
(91 kg). His aggression occasionally gets in him
in trouble with the match officials but makes him
a favourite with the supporters. Howard continued
to lead Luton's attack in 2005/06 after they were
promoted to the Coca Cola Championship. On July
22, 2006 he signed for Derby County F.C. for
£1million. After failing to score in his
first seven games for the Rams, he then scored in
four consecutive games, the first player to do so
for the club since Fabrizio Ravanelli in 2001. He
has already become a fans favourite in the short
time he has been at the club and is repaying the
large fee he commanded with his work-rate,
commitment and goals.
