CHRIS WADDLE
Christopher Roland Waddle
played for the Lawyers in the 1979/80 season
after being snapped up from Clarke Chapman on a
recommendation by physio Jim Callaghan (not the
Labour Prime Minister).
He was aged 18 whilst playing
for the Lawyers and during an interview with the
Mid Devon Gazette ahead of Tow Law's F.A. Vase
Final at Wembley in 1998 Chris confessed that at
the time of signing he knew very little of Tow
Law. However most of the players at that time
were from the Newcastle area and also trained in
that area. Chris himself was living in Wardley
and in that article he refers to having scored 19
goals during his season with Tow Law. The
official Northern League history, Northern
Goalfields, records him as having scored 23
League and Cup goals during that season.
One of the foremost Northern
League teams at that time was Blyth Spartans and
it was whilst playing against Blyth that the
talents of Chris Waddle were spotted by Joe
Harvey. As we all know at the end of that season
he signed for Newcastle and as they say the rest
is history. He went on to play for Newcastle,
Spurs, Sheffield Wednesday and of course
Marseilles. During the course of his career he
won 62 England caps between 1985 and 1992.
In his interview with the Mid
Devon Gazette he spoke of his affectionate
memories of Tow Law describing it as a "family
orientated club which has produced a lot of good
players. They always play good football". It is a
sign of his affection for the Club that he has
agreed to make a guest appearance for Michael
Bailey's testimonial match.
